R: Now, we've been waiting all day long, all weekend long, give it up for the Backstreet Boys!
N: Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo... yo, yo, hi!
R: Well, joining us right now is Howie D, AJ, Brian, Nick. Well, can I just first of all say that it's good to see familiar faces.
A: Wow. Thank you very much.
N: Thanks man, it's good to see you.
R: One of the hardest things as a DJ is when you get like a group, and you get like five guys, and you're trying to memorize faces with names, like five minutes before the interview.
N: But you've know us for so long.
R: Absolutely. Well, we mentioned on the phone, you guys have been doing this since '93 and still going.
N: Yeah.
H: Yes sir.
A: We're like the energizer bunny here.
N: We keep going, and...
A: Yup, and going, and going...
B: Thanks for playing Backstreet's Back! We were listening to it in the van.
R: Oh, you heard that in the car?
B: Dude, that's, that's rock.
N: Oh yeah, that was nice man. We were dancing. Choreography.
B: Alright! We were doing it in the van.
R: We probably have a million people in Mexico listening right now online too.
B: That's awesome!
R: My email box was literally bogged down all day from the Mexican fans.
N: Oh my goodness.
R: They were just, we can't wait, we can't wait. So guys, you're here tonight, and uh, I hear we have brand new music to hear.
N: We sure do.
R: How long did it take to do it, when did you start... tell us all about it.
H: This is actually one of the last songs we recorded, believe it or not. Uhh, we were actually here back in May, we were just about to pick between two songs for our first single and when we were actually overseas, they wanted one song and here it was an uptempo. So instead of doing two different videos and all that stuff, we decided to take one more month to try and find another song just to make one single universal. And, we just found this, literally the day we were actually here in New York.
N: It felt right.
R: You were hear it for the very first time on Z100 within 15 minutes, I promise. Now, there is one thing kinda... that looks a little different - there's only four of you this time around.
H: Umm hmm.
B: Yeah...
R: What.. let's get that out of the way first. Where is Kevin at?
H: He's at home.
AJ: I have no idea, honestly. I don't know where he is.
H: He's taking care of the baby.
R: I see.
N: He just had a baby, yeah.
R: Enjoying fatherhood to the fullest?
H: Well, his wife had it.
N: Yeah...
H: He's doing really good.
N: But uh, we miss him, I mean, but at the same time, you know, we're all in agreeance and we've decided to just go on and we're all cool. I mean, everything's great. We go over for Superbowl parties, go over, you know, we just... Howie just saw him recently, I just saw him like before that, and everybody's great. Well, obviously Brian.. relationship's incredible, and the door's always open for him to come back, but..
B: He came to us during the Never Gone tour and said that he was kind of finished with just the travelling and music and stuff. And he's, you know, at a different place in his life. So, we were cool with letting him go, and he was cool with letting us go and we're moving on, so...
N: Yeah.
R: There really wasn't much time off between albums, was there? I mean, it just seems like yesterday (B: Not a whole lot.) you were playing Jingle Ball with us.
Boys: Yeah, yeah.
A: Yeah, there really wasn't a whole lot as like... in between Black & Blue and Never Gone there was almost five years, but this one we're coming up on what, three, two... well, two. Right around two years. (B: '05 was Never Gone.) So, I mean, we, we really tried to kinda hop on the heels of Never Gone, and really get back in the studio and you know, just start out with a brand new record. So, we're been working on this record now for a little over a year, and we're finally finished with it, we love it, we're really proud of it, and can't wait for the world to hear it.
B: First right here, Z100. Woohoo!
R: Backstreet Boys! They're our guests tonight. 1800-2420-100 if you'd like to call in and chat. You guys would love to take some phone calls I'm sure, right?
N: Alright.
H: Absolutely.
A: We'd love that.
R: Alright, get the phone lines jammed. We're getting ready to premier the brand new song but I wanted to talk about what else has been going on. It's amazing to me how you guys have stayed together after so long when you come and see all these other bands come and go. I'm sure you've heard of that reality show on VH1 now. The... uh, Manband?
A: The Manband.
N: The Manband.
R: I thought of you guys right away because there's like, one of the guys from NSYNC, one of the guys from like, Colour Me Badd, and uh, 98 Degrees, and here's the Backstreet Boys, and they're still doing it, and there's already like this reality show kinda typecasting what was the boyband into the manband. Do you think of yourselves now as the official manband? Did you ever see yourselves as a boyband to start with?
N: I don't think we um, ever considered ourselves a boyband and I think really, in regards to that, you know, we're just doing what we love to do and keep it going, you know, and we're not trying to you know, if people call us a boyband, fine, if people call us whatever, you know, we don't care. We're just staying in the game and still doing our music and having fun doing it and that's why we're still here. I mean, it's been a long time to see some stuff like that, but, I mean, whatever. I guess, it's fun. It's cool to see, you know, pop music come back. I think, if they're doing music like, if they're doing shows like that, and they're gonna release music, I guess that's like a time in music when people want to hear pop music again. And we're the originals, you know what I mean, so we'll just stick around.
B: It's a attributed to the fans, too. The fans want good music, you know, fans young and old, and as long as we can continue to feed good music, and we're happy with it, we could continue another 15 years.
R: And if like Kansas is still touring, along with Foreigner, why can't the Backstreet Boys?
A: Why can't the Backstreet Boys?
B: Hey, why not?
R: Exactly. Except they only have like, one original member in those bands (AJ: Yeah.), and they're usually on the county fair circuit.
H: Umm hmm.
R: But, I think you guys will be selling out arenas for years to come.
N: We're keeping it...
B: Well, with love from radio, we've gotta thank all the Z100 listeners, 'cause thank you guys for playing the record. We appreciate it. I know you haven't played it officially yet, but they're about to hear it.
R: We're getting there!
A: Thank you in advance.
R: Another thing I wanted to mention about this force that is the Backstreet Boys is you guys all kinda played around doing your own thing. We had Johnny No-Name with uh AJ. Umm, Brian did your own little, uh, Christian stuff with the, with great success, (B: Yeah.) that was really huge, of course Nick did the solo thing, and also a lot of TV too. Um, is there like, this force that kinda draws you guys back together? (N: That's funny..) Did you miss it when you were out doing your own thing?
N: That's funny you say that. I mean, I think we all realise what got us there in the first place, and as long as we never lose that, um, we're always gonna, we know within each other, we always allow each other to do things individually, like AJ's about to release a solo record, Howie's been working on one, Brian's been working on another one, you know, I just got done doing a movie... I think as long as we allow each other to breathe, we're always gonna want to come back. And I think the magic always happens with the core, you know, and I think that's what's great about it, you know. And then we can spread off and you know, we know that there's fans that individually like each one of us, and uh, we wanna satisfy their tastes, as well as ours, you know. So, it's cool.
B: We also, you know, we hold the group in high regard. I mean that was our first and could be some of our only successes in life. And, you know, when it comes down to it, people come and go, but you know, we have to stay strong together, keep making music.
R: Alright, let's go to the phone. Let's get the Backstreet Boys live in studio with us tonight. I've already got like ten calls on hold. Let's go to Dawn, who's been waiting for like 20 minutes now. She's on line 3. Dawn, say hello to the Backstreet Boys.
Dawn: Hi guys, how are you?
A (Boys): Hi Dawn, how are you?
N: Wassup?
Dawn: I'm so excited that you guys are finally back, cause I've been a fan since probably '95, seen you guys several times, so I'm just really excited.
R: Awesome. (N: Thank you so much.) (Boys: *thank yous*)
Dawn: And I was just wondering if you guys had uh, any plans for touring anytime soon.
H: Actually, (A: Yes, we do!) we're gonna do a promotional tour here pretty soon. Pretty much all across the States, and as well as international promotion for the album. It's gonna come out October 30th, and then our plan is to actually kick off the tour, actually after the first of the year we're gonna start our season in Japan and make our way back here for the summer time. So, nice and good weather for you guys to be seeing us outside or in the arenas.
R: Tell me you're hitting Mexico, please.
Boys: *chorus of yeses, of courses, etc*
R: Do any of the Backstreet Boys speak Spanish?
A: Howie does.
R: Can we give a shoutout to Mexico? They're all listening.
H: A toda mi gente en Mexico gracias por todo su apoyo con los Backstreet Boys epa, epa, epa!¡! (To all my people in Mexico, thanks for your support to the Backstreet Boys epa epa epa!¡!)
R: Backstreet Boys are our guests tonight on Z100. I'm gonna go to Julie on line 11. You are on live on Z100. Julie, say hi to the Backstreet Boys.
H: That's right.
Julie: Hi.
A: Hey Julie.
B: Hey Julie.
H: Hey, Julie.
Julie: Oh my God!
Boys: *laughs*
Julie: It's so exciting!
R: What's your question?
Julie: Oh, I'm having a Backstreet Boys party in my car!
H: That's awesome! (A: Awesome!) By yourself? Oh okay, with some friends, okay cool.
A: Right on.
R: Julie, did you have a question?
Julie: Yeah, I wanted to know, do you prefer your old fans like me who been with you for like ten years or more or do you prefer like new fans?
H: How old are you?
B: Well, she said ten years or more, so...
N: We prefer fans! *laughs* Period.
A: All of our fans. Old, new, I mean...
H: Small, big..,
A: We have the maddest, we have the best fans in the world that have been with us over the entire 15 years we've been, been together and now obviously, we're always looking for get new fans, but thank you to you and all of our fans that have been there since day one. You guys keep us doing what we're doing, so much love to you and much respect to you.
B: And thanks for the party in the car.
A: Yes, wish we were there partying it up with you.
N: How many people are there in that car?
R: Alright, we're gonna go to Nicole on 13. She's got a question about the new album, I believe. Nicole, you're on live with the Backstreet Boys on Z100. Say hi.
Nicole: Hey, what's going on guys?
A: What's going on, Nicole? (Boys: *heys, etc*)
Nicole: How are you?
A: Pretty good. (B: How are you?)
Nicole: Well, this is Sandra first. Well, my friend Nicole's here, she just wanted to say hi but uh, she's a little shy, so... say hi, Nicole.
Nicole: Hi guys!
A: Hi Nicole!
B: Hi Nicole!
Sandra: We're kinda partners-in-crime. So my question to you guys is, number one, what's the name of the album if you have like a premise of why you came up with that name, and the second part of that question is, what can Backstreet fans expect from it, 'cause me being a Backstreet fan for a long time, I expect some really good stuff, of course, as usual, as you always done, but what can we expect, you know, the fans.
N: Well, we don't have an album title yet. We are working on that right now.
B: As we speak. *laughs*
A: Yes, as we speak.
R: That usually just happens organically, right?
N: We were in the car, like, we went through a million different things, (A: Yes.) and it didn't work. So we're trying ot figure that out. What was the second part of the question, I forgot.
A: What's the album gonna be like?
Sandra: Oh, the fans, what we can expect from you guys. You know, it's gonna be great stuff, I know, it's gonna be great stuff. But what can we expect... can we expect a different sound, or is it going to be similar to what you've always have done,or how is it going to be different this time around.
A: I think it's actually fairly close to like, the Millennium album in the sense of it's kinda widespead. It's got a little bit of rock, it's got a little bit of R n'B, it's got a little bit of pop, it's got a little bit of dance. But we've definitely gone back to our core roots of the harmonies and the great melodies and the great pop lyrics whereas with Never Gone it was a little bit more edgy, little bit less harmonies, and more on the rock-pop tip. This is going back to what we're really good at, I mean, this, with this record, we can bring this record to the uh, you know, stage and we can dance again, we can do stuff like we used to do. So, I think the fans are gonna love it. I think you guys are gonna love it. We're really, really proud of it, so...
Sandra: Thank you so much, it was a pleasure talking to you guys.
A: You're very welcome! Enjoy! (H: See you around!) Have a great day!
B: And be sure to call back to Z100 and request the song if you like it.
R: I think it's about that time. Are you guys ready? (B: OH!)
A: We're ready!
R: No one in the world has heard this yet (N: I'm scared.) on the radio, and I'm gonna let you guys go ahead and give us the Z100 New York introduction. Brand new, world premier music now from the Backstreet Boys. You guys take it away.
N: Oh, wow.
A: Check it out you guys. This is Inconsolable.
*silence*
Boys: *laugh*
N: Hold on, hold on, hold on!
A: Oh, duh.
H: This is our first single, off the new album for the Backstreet Boys...
N: Which is out Oct..
A, H, B: October 30th!
N: October 30th.
B: Play it!
N: This is Inconsolable.
R: Alright, here we go.
*song*
R: Backstreet Boys, there is is, Inconsolable! New stuff on Z100! World premier! Smiles all around.
N: That's right, that's right!
B: OH!
R: How did it sound to you guys?
Boys: Sounds great! (N: ...to be on the radio.)
B: Pretty cool!
N: Oh my God.
B: It's like, we're a success!
N: Wow. It's, it's weird. I mean, that song is really special. I mean, I love it. I think it's great.
R: Tell us why.
N: It's not like a normal song. First of all, I was telling Howie this today, it has that quality like, when we released I Want It That Way, you almost had to listen to, first of all, I Want It That Way really made no sense, you know. But this one makes more sense than I Want It That Way, but it still makes you wanna listen to it and you know, and understand what it means. I mean, even the word "inconsolable" is like, it's like, what is that about? The, you have to listen to it and even when you listen to the verses, the verses are like a hook in itself, you know, in like when the bridge comes along and you know, the choruses, it's like two different songs mixed together. I'm absolutely in love with this song.
B: We haven't gotten tired of it. (N: At all.) There are some songs that we've heard over and over and over, like okay, play something different. (N: Right.) Inconsolable, you still hear something new every time.
H: Absolutely. Three months from now it may be a little bit different, but...
N: When we're singing it on stage.
R: What song do you think you've performed the most your entire career?
H: Quit Playing Games. (A: Probably Quit Playing Games.)
R: Right back to the first one?
A: Every single tour. (B: Oh, yeah.) Every tour.
N: And we've tried to remix it, I dunno how many times, but it's still just great.
B: *does the QPG intro*
R: Well, we're looking at an October 30th release day. Nick's probably gonna come up with the name of the album in the shower tomorrow...
N: Basically, yes.
H: Or in the bathroom.
N: I'm a squatter.
Boys: *laugh* (A: Squat...)
R: I can't tell you how excited we are to have you guys back. I got time for one more call. Um, Shannon's been waiting forever. Shannon, you're on live with the Backstreet Boys on Z100. Say hello.
Shannon: Hi!
Boys: *hi, hello, hey Shannon*
B: Hello!
Shannon: I'm so excited, I can't believe I'm talking to you guys.
B: Hey, did you like the song?
Shannon: Oh, I love it. It was awesome. (B: Thank you.) I'm gonna call Z100, gonna make sure everyone calls too.
Boys: *laugh* (Howie: Thanks.) (AJ: Good, good, good.)
Shannon: I actually have two questions. I was on hold so long I came up with another one.
R: Alright, you got it, go ahead.
Shannon: First question, how come you guys don't have a MySpace page?
A: Oh, good question.
H: We are making it right now.
A: We are in the process of making a Backstreet Boys music MySpace.
N: In that questions..
Shannon: It's like the biggest thing so you know, it's good for you guys to be on there. Second is, can you shout out to my friend Brianna. We have been fans since the beginning, best friends, went to every show in New York. We went to the, my mom took us to the CBS taping, took us to The View taping (B: Nice.). we have seen you guys everywhere.
Boys: *hey Brianna*
B: Brianna and Shannon.
A: What up Brianna? It's Backstreet Boys, helllloo.
H: Hey, how's it going?
Shannon: She's probably crying right now, (N: Don't cry.) 'cause she really loves you.
Boys: *thank you for your support*
R: Alright Shannon, thanks for the call! Make sure you go get the album on the 30th, okay?
Shannon: Oh, I will!
R: Take care!
H: 'Preciate it.
A: Thank you!
Shannon: Bye bye!
R: Alright, once again, Nick, Brian, Howie, AJ, thank you so much for coming in and let Z100 premier the new song. We love it, the phones are already going crazy and I'm sure we're going to be hearing a lot more of that on Z100. And I want to take you out with one more Backstreet Boys song. I want to see who can be the first one to identify it. Right off note number 1. This might be an oldie but a goodie. I want to see who knows the Backstreet Boys the best. Are we ready?
A: Not really.
Boys: It's Christmas Time!
B: I got it! I said it right with you!
A: So, we tied!
R: Alright, since it is August we won't leave you with Christmas Time, but again, we're looking at October 30th, new Backstreet Boys music in stores, and check them out online, check them out every else.
H: BackstreetBoys.com!
A: Yep, BackstreetBoys.com!
B: Thanks to Z100. God Bless.
Boys: *thank you guys*
B: Gotta go!
Thanks to Pat at Bittersweet Delight.
