Congratulations on the album. You guys got together again after you appeared on Oprah?

Yep. After the well-needed break that we took, I decided, along with my mother, to talk publicly about my drug and alcohol addiction and it was great, great show. Oprah had mentioned that the guys would have loved to have been there to thank me and to tell me how proud they are of me and, sure enough, they all showed up and it was a tearfest. We all went back to Kevin’s room at the hotel afterwards and talked, and we started up at the end of January, beginning of February 2004. Did the band stage an intervention?

Kevin was kinda the catalyst. We were in Boston in July of 2001. We were supposed to, on a day off, go and throw the pitch out at a major league baseball game and sing the national anthem. I was hungover and just kinda said "Screw you guys, I don’t feel like doing it" Kevin was pretty much at wit’s end. He came to my room and I had my bedroom door locked and we exchanged some words I don’t want to repeat, and that pretty much was my wake-up call that I do have a problem. The next day I flew to rehab.

So did you stage an intervention when Nick [Carter] was dating Paris Hilton?

Um, not so much an intervention, but Nick would come to the studio and he would ask us for advice on his relationship, or if they were having a fight or things were wrong he would seem just very frustrated. I think it was just an unfortunate circumstance: two young pop icons living two totally different lives. Neither one of them were at all ready to be in a serious relationship. Nick has had to deal with a lot with his whole family for the past 10 years and that on top of dating Paris Hilton, who’s known for just being in the media and wanting all the attention, he was kinda asking for it. He definitely learned his lesson and he’s much happier without her. And so are we [laughs].

You cut Nick’s hair last year. He must be confident you’re sober.

Yes, definitely. I actually liked it, so did he. He’s actually keeping it short.

But how did you come to cut it?

I just said "Hey, why don’t we try something different on you?" We were in rehearsals and he said "No-one else do I trust to do it," so I took him back to my house and got the clippers and buzzed his hair off. I knew it was going to grow back, If it wasn't I wouldn’t have done it.

The group forms a prayer circle before every show?

Absolutely. That’s something that we’ll never stop doing. That’s our way to quiet ourselves before we go onstage, to give thanks to everyone that’s involved with the tour, because there are so many people that our fans don’t really see that are working their asses off. It’s our way of saying thanks before we go on stage and try to kick ass!
