DJ announces that it's time to reveal who their
special guest is.
DJ: Here's the deal. People have been calling
up all night long to guess the guest, that's been
our gimmick here this evening... We're going to go
ahead and let him talk, but we're not going to let
him say who he is. Go ahead and give him the
headphones over there.
Nick: [in a very soft, feminine voice] Hi.
DJ: Say hi- Aww! Such a cute little voice you
have.
Nick: [very feminine] Thank you.
DJ: What exactly do you do?
Nick: [very feminine] I'm a thinger.
DJ: You're a singer.
Nick: [vfem] Yes.
DJ: What group do you sing with?
Nick: [vfem] I sing with a boy group.
DJ: A boy group? Which one?
Nick: [vfem] Um... [goes into full-on teeny shriek]
'N SYNC ARE HERE!! OH MY GOD!!!!
DJ: Don't say the N word. I was told I can't
bring them up, actually.
Nick: Nah, it's OK.
DJ: It's OK? Yeah? I don't know, I heard you guys
are big rivals or something.
Nick: No! We love each other.
DJ: Really? That's a lie, right?
Nick: Wait a minute... Rivals? You're giving
something away!
DJ: I am? Yeah, that's true... Well, they
know you're a Backstreet Boy.
Nick: Aww, maan...
DJ: We told them that part. They don't know which
one, though. So here's the deal. We have another
pair of Backstreet Boys tickets to give away [ ... ]
Whoever guesses right first, wins.
Nick: [in very low voice] All right.
DJ: Easy enough?
Nick: [vlow] Sure.
DJ: I'm going to pick up a line, you're going to
say 'Hi, Mix,' are you ready?
Nick: [vlow] Okay.
DJ: Here we go. Go ahead.
Nick: [vlow] Yeah, what's up. Mix.
DJ: Are you there?
Caller: ..Carter.
DJ: Is it who?
Nick: [vlow] Does it sound like me?
Caller: Nick Carter.
DJ: Does it sound like him?
Caller: Yes.
Nick: [vlow] I sound like Nick.
Caller: Yes.
Nick: [vlow] You sure I ain't AJ?
Nick: [normal voice] Well, dang it.
DJ: Are you going to give it away?
Nick: I don't know. You think I should?
DJ: Yeah... Well, who is this, first of all?
Caller: Danielle.
DJ: Where are you calling from?
Caller: Tampa, Florida.
DJ: How much do you love the Backstreet Boys?
Caller: I love them SO much.
DJ: If it's Nick Carter, and you're so sure, tell
him something about himself that ...
Nick: He don't know.
DJ: He doesn't know... yeah! (laughs)
Caller: .. know???
DJ: Come on, throw us a little Backstreet Boys
information.
Nick: Pleeeez?
Caller: Umm [mumbled] then you know it's you?
*I'm not sure what she said, sorry*
DJ: He already knows that.
Nick: Wait a minute, wait a minute. That ain't
true. DAAAHNT! [buzzer sound]
DJ: What else?
Caller: He's a really, really good singer.
Nick: DAAHNT! Nope!
DJ: I think you have a low self-esteem.
Nick: Uh, I wouldn't say ... what else?
Caller: Umm...
DJ: I'm a mom. I can't help it.
Caller: You guys [mumbled] eleven years.
Nick: DING DING DING!
DJ: Very good! You're going to give her the
tickets, then?
Nick: Sure.
DJ: You've won Backstreet Boys concert tickets,
how about that? And they're autographed, too.
Caller: Thank you so much!
DJ: So now the cat's out of the bag. I have Nick
Carter here live in the studio with me... Nick, is
it cool if we take some calls from listeners?
Nick: Let's do it. Why not.
DJ: Hi, Mix, who's this?
Caller: Hi, this is Alison.
DJ: Hi Alison, how are you?
Caller: Great.
DJ: You don't want to talk to me, you want to
talk to Nick. Go ahead.
Caller: Yeah... I do. Hey Nick. What's up?
Nick: WHAZZUP?
Caller: How are you?
Nick: I'm pretty good... Can't you tell? I'm
happy.
Caller: So what are you doing?
Nick: [stupid voice] Uhh... Weellll... I'm
sitting at a chair in a radio station.
Caller: Wow, that sounds exciting.
Nick: Mix FM.
DJ: OK, this is your big chance, ask him a
big question, this is like the only opportunity
you'll ever have to do this.
Caller: Hey, can I come to your concert?
Nick: Aww... I don't know, I think we only
have a certain amount of tickets to give away.
DJ: Actually, we're giving away tickets on the
show at the end of the night tomorrow night and
Friday night.
Caller: But what about now?
DJ: You have to listen to win.
Nick: Yeah, you gotta listen... I guess... That's
what she's telling me. It's not my fault, so don't
blame me! I'm just a singer!
DJ: Yeah, great. Beat up the DJ. Thanks.
Nick: OK?
DJ: Let's grab another call. Hi, Mix, who's this?
Caller: Crystal.
DJ: Where are you calling from?
Caller: Tampa.
DJ: Ask Nick a big question.
Caller: OK, Nick, this is going to sound really
bad, but ...
Nick: Oh God! Please don't!
Caller: How is Brian doing?
Nick: Next call please. Nah, I'm just joking.
Brian... he's doing good, growing facial hair
and living with his wife right now.
Caller: So he did get married.
Nick: Yeah, he did.
Caller: OK.
DJ: Two of you guys are married now, right?
Nick: Huh?
DJ: Aren't two of the Backstreet Boys married?
Nick: Yeah, Kevin and Brian.
DJ: Kevin and Brian.
Nick: Yeah.
DJ: Happily... You don't look too happy about that.
Nick: [tearful voice] ... because, I lost my chances!
Nah, just joking.
DJ: You'll have plenty of chances. How old are you?
You're young, aren't you?
Nick: Yeah, I'm 21.
DJ: Only 21, yeah.
Nick: I'm pretty young.
DJ: You don't need to be thinking about getting
married yet. That's all nonsense. All right, Mix,
who's this?
Caller: This is Kathleen.
DJ: Hi Kathleen, where are you calling from?
Caller: Clearwater.
DJ: OK, talk to Nick.
Caller: Hi Nick.
Nick: [very high voice] Hiiii!
Caller: What's up?
Nick: [very low voice] Wazzup.
Caller: Actually, I just wanted to congratulate you
guys, because you guys are doing so awesome on the
Black and Blue tour, and I went to see it in Fort
Lauderdale and I just thought it rocked...
Nick: Well thank you.
Caller: ... I thought Millennium was really good,
but this one was really cool.
Nick: Yeah, this show is... we're having fun with
this one.
Caller: Yeah... What are you guys up to now?
Nick: What are we up to now? We're getting ready
to go out and shoot our video for More Than That.
Caller: Really? Cool!
Nick: In like two days.
Caller: Where at?
Nick: In L.A.
Caller: Oh, OK.
Nick: Yep.
Caller: That's cool.
DJ: What are you guys doing to get ready for
the big tour?
Nick: Well, we've basically already got
everything done, we've already done the first
leg of the U.S. tour, and now we're getting
ready to do South America in about 2 weeks.
DJ: Wow. How long are you guys going to be
there?
Nick: I think we should be over there for
about 9 weeks, 8 weeks.
DJ: When you guys travel like that, do you get
to see anything, or do you just work, work, work?
Nick: Mmm, not really. Well... it really
depends on if you have days off and stuff like
that.
DJ: Right. They actually let you guys have days
off, huh?
Nick: Yeah, sometimes. (laughs) We let
ourselves, you know!
DJ: Let's go ahead and take another call. Hi,
Mix, who's this?
Caller: This is Claire.
DJ: And Claire, where are you calling from?
Caller: Riverview.
DJ: Didn't you win tickets tonight?
Caller: Yep.
DJ: She's been calling and calling and calling.
She knows all about you guys.
Nick: Oh, really?
DJ: Yeah, probably your biggest fan in Tampa.
Caller: Yeah...
Nick: What's up?
Caller: Hi!
Nick: How are you doing?
Caller: I'm OK! I just wanted to ask, what's
your opinion on the Napster thing?
Nick: On the Napster thing, I... I don't know. I
don't really get into all that politics stuff, you
know, I just do music and have fun. I don't care
if people have it for free or whatever, it really
don't ... I guess, I guess there's certain issues
that are involved in it, you know, that artists
have a problem with, I guess what, they should
just work out something that's fair, you know
what I'm saying, for everyone.
DJ: Right, right.
Caller: Because I go online, and like, I get like,
I have an AJ Valentine's CD, where I have the first
thing, where AJ called up for Valentine's Day and
said, hello...
Nick: Oh really.
Caller: Yeah.
Nick: Yeah, it really don't... I don't care. I
really don't pay attention to stuff like that,
honestly.
Caller: That's cool.
DJ: Anything else, Claire?
Caller: Um, not that I can think of.
DJ: All right, we'll go ahead and grab one more call,
and then we'll go ahead and play a Backstreet Boys
song. Hi, who's this?
Caller: Hi, this is Amy, in Tampa.
DJ: Hi Amy, how are you?
Caller: I'm fine. I know this sounds a little
strange... I'm a mom, actually.
DJ: That's all right, so am I.
Nick: You're a mom? (they all laugh)
Caller: I have a 9 year old who just loves the
Backstreet Boys, and I was just wondering, did you
guys go to any performing arts schools around here?
I mean, the ones who are from Tampa.
Nick: Umm... I think Howie went to USF, but I
think he took a couple... USF? Right?
DJ: USF?
Nick: Yeah - USF, here in Tampa. That just goes
to show you how long I've lived here and ...
all right! Anyways, yeah, Howie went to USF and
I guess he took a couple of performing arts
courses there or something... I don't know...
Caller: Did you go to the high schools around
here?
Nick: I went to... I didn't go to any high
schools. I went to Orange Grove when it was a
junior high, I went to Young, and I went to
Miles Elementary.
Caller: Oh yeah...
Nick: So those are the schools I went to, and
then I kind of had to get out.
Caller: I have friends way back when who went
to Young, so I know that one.
Nick: Loved Young.
Caller: So how do your parents deal with all
this, I mean, are they really enjoying you
guys, your success?
Nick: Yeah, I mean, they're having a blast.
My brother is starting to tear up the scene now.
DJ: Yeah, Aaron Carter, right?
Nick: [stupid voice] Yep, Aaron Carter.
DJ: And what's he doing exactly?
Nick: Little squirt!
DJ: How old is he?
Nick: That ... rat! (laughs)
DJ: (laughs) How old is he?
Nick: Nah... Anyways, um, he's about... (laughs)
He's 13.
Caller: Sibling rivalry.
DJ: I was just going to say the same thing.
Nick: I'm just playing, gosh! Give me a break!
(laughs)
DJ: Little bit of competition... are you guys
going to be big competitors-
Nick: Not at all.
DJ: Is he doing the same kind of stuff as you?
Nick: You know what? If he puts me to sleep,
then I'll just lay in my grave.
DJ: Aww.
Caller: Congratulations. I'm really glad to
see young people getting influenced in a good
way by you guys.
Nick: Thank you.
DJ: Don't you have a sister or something who's
starting a music career too, right?
Nick: Yeah. Leslie's already got a single
out too.
DJ: Really? How old is she?
Nick: She's 15.
DJ: Wow.
Caller: Wow.
Nick: That's her song! (laughs) "WOW!"
DJ: Is it really?
Nick: It's called Like Wow.
DJ: Like Wow?
Nick: So check it out man! Please!
DJ: Are there any radio stations playing it?
Nick: No. You should though, it's a good song.
DJ: I'll go ahead and recommend that to the
program director, how's that?
Nick: It's good, it's a really good song, it's...
kind of a *little* childish, kiddish, but she's
got some really great songs.
DJ: That's cool. Let's go ahead... actually,
I wanted to ask you, aren't you, you're
promoting other bands, or something?
Nick: Well, that's actually partially what I'm
here for. I'm kind of doing like a co-management
thing with a group called BIK, which is a rock
band out of, of course, Tampa, Florida.
DJ: And that stands for...
Nick: Born Into Kaos. But they like to go by BIK.
DJ: BIK.
Nick: Yeah, but anyways, they're playing Livestock.
They're going to be playing Livestock really soon.
DJ: One of my favourite weekends of the entire
year, I have to say that! (laughs)
Nick: Certain people like it.
DJ: Have you ever been there?
Nick: Nah...
DJ: Oh, you missed the biggest party.
Nick: Oh ... really ... Oh my God! (laughs) But
they're a rock band. That's like my forte, is
rock music.
DJ: Really?
Nick: I love rock music.
DJ: How did you end up doing the music you're
doing?
Nick: Um, well, I've always liked, rock music
has always been my influence and that's what I
try to portray to this pop that, everybody says
pop music, and we're classified pop. But when
you listen to our voicse, we all individually
have different sounds to our voices. AJ has a
very R&B voice, you know, a very soulful voice.
I have an edge, I guess, an edge, rock type
of voice, and I try to bring that to that
music, that atmosphere. And you know, Brian
has a very mellow voice... and we all have
our individual voices that we bring to it,
that's what creates the Backstreet Boys.
DJ: Actually, I wanted to ask you something
else. I've been reading a lot online and that
a lot of the - some people are saying that the
whole boy band thing might be fizzling out,
and more girl bands are coming out and creating
some big competition for you guys, and do you
feel like that's a reality?
Nick: You know, the funniest thing is, I guess
people don't realise that we've been together
for over 8 years.
DJ: 8 years.
Nick: *Over* 8 years. I've been in this group
since I was 12.
DJ: Wow, that's amazing.
Nick: You know, so that just goes to show that
we were out a long time ago, before this whole
boy band thing even started up again, you know
what I'm saying, and you know, I guess we're
just thrown in that category, and all we have
to do is just withstand time, you know, until
people say OK... we give in! (laughs)
DJ: What do you guys do to make sure you
stand out from the rest of the group? Do you
guys have any master plans, or solo careers
going on, or anything like that?
Nick: You know, I think what we'll all do is
just sit back and you know, decide what we
can do to make the group better, whether or
not it's a solo thing, whether or not it's
doing more albums together. You know, we all
have individual dreams and we all want to kind
of do our individual things too, someday,
and that might be cool and we all support
each other in that, you know, and then we'll
always come back together and stuff like
that.
DJ: I also read something a long time ago,
this might have been a couple of years ago
actually, online, that the Backstreet Boys
might be doing country music. Was that just
some big, huge, weird rumour or something?
Nick: Nahhh...
DJ: I know, everybody's laughing at me,
but I swear I read that on one of the
websites!
Nick: We... I mean... Nah.
DJ: No, not in a million years, right?
Nick: No.
DJ: I didn't think so.
Nick: Like I said, I think the thing that's
really cool about this group is the diversity
in music and the types of things that we
bring to the whole pop culture type of thing.
I mean, we were classified, we started off
almost R&B, and then we went, started going
a little more mainstream, with pop, and now
we're starting to back off and go back to our
roots a little bit, go more, you know...
DJ: R&B again.
Nick: R&B, rock, include some type of rock
in there. We like to mix it up, that's the
thing that's cool about this group.
DJ: Who does your choreography?
Nick: Fatima Robinson.
DJ: Really, that's cool. OK, we're going to
go ahead and play a Backstreet Boys song,
Shape of My Heart, that's Shannon's favourite
song, our promotions director, she wanted us
to play that.
Nick: Play More Than That.
DJ: Oh, we're going to play lots more than
that, we have 10 songs-
Nick: No, there's a song called More Than
That.
DJ: Ohhh! We should play More Than That!
Nick: You guys got it? Did you ADD it? HUH??
DJ: Uh... I don't know. How about if we play
it after this song?
Nick: Okay. Sure!
DJ: We'll take more calls, too.
