| Teen Scene Magazine talks to Howie D | Submit an interview |
|
Since launching Teen Scene Magazine I have interviewed today's hottest and upcoming celebrities, but just lately I interviewed one of the five kings of the music industry. Earlier this year I was contacted by, Tina Wells, who runs a company called Buzzteen [note: Tina left Buzzteen in late June to start a new company called, Buzz Marketing Group.] In early May, Tina offered me the opportunity to interview, Howie Dorough, from the Backstreet Boys at a charity event that she was organizing to raise money for the Dorough Lupus Foundation, which Howie started in memory of his late sister, Caroline, who passed away due to Lupus. [Read more about the foundation below this article] As a huge fan of the Backstreet Boys since early 1997, I of course jumped on the offer to be able to interview Howie.
On the day of the event, I still didn't have all of my questions ready. What do you ask someone who is part of the biggest group ever, and has been interviewed time and time again. Once I got to the hotel where Buzzteen was hosting the Pre-Party, we were escorted to the room where Howie was. A few minutes after going in the room I shook hands with Howie, and then we sat down to begin the interview. Teen Scene: How many charity events do you do for Lupus each year? Howie Dorough [Backstreet Boys]: We have an annual event each year. This year it is on June 1, and June 2 at Sea World. It will be a variety show and auction. We do about 2-3 shows each year. Teen Scene: Does Lupus strike a certain age group, or just anybody? Howie Dorough: It's a stereotype thing. All people can get it, but it seems to mainly strike females and ethnic's. Teen Scene: What are the funds that you raise used for? Such as research, families with Lupus, etc.? Howie Dorough: Yeah, they are mainly used on research, and families. Teen Scene: What advice would you give to someone trying to get into the entertainment business? Howie Dorough: I guess to strive to for your goals. Try to get exposure. And [laughs] don't put all your eggs in one basket! Teen Scene: Who is your role model, or person you go to for advice? Howie Dorough: My family, and before my sister, Caroline, died she was that person. Teen Scene: Do you see yourself getting into a long-term relationship anytime soon? Howie Dorough: Music is my long-term relationship right now [laughs]. But one day I would like to have a wife and have kids. Teen Scene: What has been the most difficult thing about starting your own record label? Howie Dorough: probably finding partners. Teen Scene: Like Interscope? Howie Dorough: Yes, them and Krystal. Teen Scene: How do you feel the Black & Blue tour is better than other tours going on right now? Like *NSync and Britney. Howie Dorough: I haven't been to any concerts lately so I have no idea. Teen Scene: What else do you have planned for this [Memorial] weekend? Howie Dorough: Well the bowl-a-thon tonight, Fao Schwarz, and Steve Madden. Teen Scene: So are you going to bowl a perfect game tonight [laughs]? Howie Dorough: Hopefully. I will try my best. [laughs] After the interview I told Howie a little about Teen Scene, but since there were more fans waiting to get autographs and to meet him, we didn't get to talk much. Anyway, about an hour after the interview everyone left, and it was time for the main event. Once we got to the main event, we found out that Howie wasn't coming for about an hour or two, so we had to wait for awhile. The wait was sure worth it though. As soon as Howie came into the building, he was led to where he would be bowling. Thanks to the wonderful Buzzteen staff I got escorted through the large group of fans to where Howie was bowling, so I could take some pictures of him in action. Once Howie was ready to bowl, the music started playing. To my surprise the first song that came on was Willa Ford [Nick Carter's ex-girlfriend], next they played "Lady Marmalade" which Howie seemed to enjoy. It was finally time for Howie to show off his bowling skills. Howie ended up bowling a few gutter balls, but still ended with a pretty good game, so don't mark him off as the worst Backstreet Bowler. I guess that also answers our question "So are you going to bowl a perfect game tonight?" Overall, Tina and the entire Buzzteen staff did a wonderful job organizing the event. I would like to give thanks to Tina, Howie, and the Buzzteen staff for being so nice. Tina I would especially like to thank you for getting everything setup, you really are good at organizing events... and I can't wait to see your next events, and to work with you more! I would also like to tell Howie thank you for being so nice to take time for me to do the interview, it was great to finally meet you, and on top of that be able to sit down with you and interview you! I can't wait to meet you again! And to the Buzzteen staff... thanks for answering all my questions... and being so helpful! You guys were great... and I can't wait to meet and hopefully work with you all again soon! Tina Wells, left Buzzteen in late June to start a new company called, Buzz Marketing Group. Her new company will deal with event and promotions that focuses on teens. You can check out the website for Buzz Marketing Group at: http://www.Buzzmg.com If you would like to donate or get more information about the Dorough Lupus Foundation then check out their website at: http://www.DoroughLupusFoundation.org - Teen Scene Magazine would like to stress the importance of donating to the Dorough Lupus Foundation. All money that is donated will be spent on research and given to families with Lupus who are unable to pay for the expensive medical bills. If you don't have any money to donate, but have some spare time then how about spreading the word to try to raise awareness of Lupus. Howie's sister, Caroline, died at a very young age because of Lupus, and many other people around the world are also dealing with Lupus, so help out, and remember for every person that you tell or the money that you donate, you could be saving someone's life. |
